CHILDREN'S ROAD SAFETY
GED Africa is committed to protecting the safety and well-being of children living along the Kasomeno–Mwenda Toll Road Project (KMTR) corridor. The Children’s Road Safety Campaign is designed to reduce road safety risks by equipping children and communities with practical, age-appropriate knowledge to navigate changing road and construction environments safely.
As construction progresses and traffic patterns evolve, the campaign focuses on proactive risk awareness, particularly in areas where children are most exposed to road and construction activity. The programme forms part of GED Africa’s broader approach to community health and safety management.
The campaign uses child-friendly, locally appropriate learning tools to reinforce key road safety behaviours. Core topics include safe road crossing, visibility, awareness of construction machinery, and understanding traffic risks.
Educational materials have been developed for the project, including a children’s storybook and visual infographics. These resources are used consistently across all engagements to support clear, accessible messaging and reinforce learning through repetition.
Delivery
A defining feature of the campaign is its focus on high risk areas, such as areas in peak construction, with high heavy machinery traffic flow; and high pedestrian traffic areas such as schools, markets, settlements, and locations with lower school enrolment rates.
Delivery methods include:
- School-based workshops
- Engagements in high-risk areas
- Community-based sessions to reach out-of-school children
This blended approach ensures that road safety messaging reaches children across different settings and reflects local realities.
