WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT

GED Africa’s Women’s Empowerment programme is a multi-layered community campaign designed to address gender-related social risks associated with large-scale infrastructure development. The programme forms part of GED Africa’s broader commitment to responsible project delivery and safe, inclusive environments for both communities and workers along the Kasomeno–Mwenda Toll Road (KMTR) Project corridor.

Anti-Gender-Based Violence (GBV) focus

A core component of the Women’s Empowerment programme is its focus on raising awareness to mitigate any gender-based violence (GBV) risks. GBV presents a material social risk in infrastructure projects, particularly in contexts shaped by labour influx, income change, and limited access to support services.

GED Africa’s approach recognises that GBV is a complex and sensitive issue that requires experienced partners, cultural appropriateness, and alignment with national frameworks. Activities are therefore designed and delivered in collaboration with relevant government institutions and established community-based organisations.

  • Workshops are being delivered to GED Africa staff, as well as our contractor’s staff
  • Delivery is facilitated through government agencies in the DRC and Zambia to ensure alignment with national public health frameworks
  • Community based organisations (CBOs) with established frameworks and expertise support the effectiveness of these workshops

Partnerships with CBOs NAMY and GEBAVEECHI also support:

  • GBV awareness sessions for secondary school learners
  • Sensitisation workshops for educators
  • Age-appropriate discussions on respect, safety, and gender awareness

GED Africa’s role focuses on enabling delivery through logistical support and the adaptation of educational materials to ensure accessibility and consistency within the project context.
